Call for applications – International Summer School on European Union Public Health and Migrations

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 11-15 September 2023

Under the auspices of the Jean Monnet Module on EU Public Health and Migrations (EUPHAM), the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology together with its partner, the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is organizing the first Summer School on EU Public Health and Migrations with a special focus on the challenges and experiences by migrants along the Balkan Route.

The Summer School will host 25 participants from all over the world and will offer a forum to discuss relevant issues related to EU public health standards applied in non-EU countries, the lessons learned and the challenges faces. Lectures and field trips will cover the following topics: public health in the EU and Western Balkans; communicable diseases; cultural approaches to vulnerable groups; EU public health and current debates regarding the application of prescribed standards towards migrants and e-health and EU practices.

·      The Summer School aims to:

·      contribute to better academic, professional and media coverage of the new challenges presented with the migration crisis and Covid-19 pandemic in terms of offering knowledge on EU health policy standards and their specific application and meaning for migrants’ health protection in the European Union.

·      offer the knowledge and skills in addressing importance of universal health care for migrants with focus on evidence-based and inclusive policies.

·      To offer information and models for decision makers.

The participation fee is 25 Euros for students and 35 Euros for all other participants. This fee covers one lunch and one coffee break per day, tuition, conference materials, and field trips in and around the city of Sarajevo.


Who should participate?

·     BA, MA and PhD students of medicine or social sciences who wish to acquire competitive personal competence beneficial for their future careers in academia or in practice-oriented professions;

·     Members of civil society organizations, practitioners;

·     Public servants working with migrants, decision-makers;

·     Everyone who is interested in in migrations, public health, EU health policy and vulnerable groups.

The final certificate award ceremony of the 1st edition of EUPHAM module

On May 16th the final certificate award ceremony of the 1st edition of EUPHAM module was held for all the successful participants which completed their final exam. Three best case studies were awarded to the following students:

Mirna Kovac (Department of Political Science and International Relations) for her work entitled “Migrants Access to Public Health in the EU”. She received the award for the best case study – social science focus.

Rijad Ciceklic (Sarajevo Medical School) for his work entitled “Migrant Access To Healthcare In EU Countries”. He received the award for the best case study – medicine focus.

Sumeja Sarajlic (Sarajevo Medical School) for her work entitled “Inability To Access Previous Medical Records With A Language Barrier”. She received the award for the best case study – policy focus.

A big thank you and congratulations to all our participants and we’re looking forward to welcoming the next generation in October 2023!

First EUPHAM Stakeholder Workshop in December 2022

We cordially invite you to the first EUPHAM stakeholder workshop as part of the EUPHAM – EU Public Health and Migrations project, co-financed by the European Union as part of the Jean Monnet Module. The project is coordinated and implemented by the University of Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST).

One of the goals of the project is the involvement of stakeholders from Bosnia and Herzegovina, including government organizations and NGO’s, journalists, medical and humanitarian workers working with migrants and/or are involved in projects concerning the public health of people on the move.

The workshop will present the EUPHAM strategic research agenda for cooperation and the situation on the ground, which has been established so far through the project. The workshop will focus on the presentation of the results so far and will invite to a discussion on the current situation in BiH in this area, as well as talk about the EU standards that are currently applied in the area of public health standards for people on the move.

The workshop will be held on December 15, 2022. at SSST University, Hrasnička cesta 3A, 71000 Sarajevo.
